Since the Renault Kwid first landed in South Africa 5 years ago, it has caused quite a stir in the motor industry. Are you thinking of buying a Renault Kwid? Read on about the impressive 2021 model. Also, explore why comprehensive car insurance is needed for this car if you plan on financing your new purchase.
The safer Kwid Climber arrived in 2020 1
Initially, the Kwid’s safety was not the greatest as it lacked airbags and anti-lock brakes (or ABS brakes). When the Kwid was crash-tested by Global NCAP 5 years ago, it received a 0-star safety rating for adult occupants. After Renault added a driver’s airbag, the Kwid managed to get a 1-star rating.
This time the Kwid has been ‘modernised’ as the Climber. Renault boosted safety by equipping the Kwid with ABS brakes and 2 front airbags.
The Kwid Climber’s design1
Its new design is striking, largely due to its ‘slit-like’ LED running lights for daytime. The wheel size has been increased from 13 to 14 inches. Larger alloy wheels stabilise the car better due to the increased tyre surface area touching the road and are able to manage the scourge of potholes better. Boot luggage space comprises 279 litres, which can be increased to 620 litres by folding down the back seats.
How is the Kwid’s interior?1
This has a mixture of pros and cons – the upholstery stands out, and the aircon controls have a professional chrome touch. Unfortunately, the driver’s seat is too high, making it uncomfortable for taller drivers. To add to this, the steering wheel is not adjustable, which may make it uncomfortable for the driver.
Additional standard features1
Unexpected for this vehicle category, the Kwid comes with a reverse-view camera and a touchscreen information system equipped with Apple CarPlay/Android compatibility. All four windows are electric. One drawback, however, is that the fuel icon does not indicate the fuel level in the tank and only starts flashing when the fuel is low.
How does the Kwid perform?1
This car has a naturally aspirated, 1-litre, 3-cylinder petrol engine with a 50 kW power output and 91 Nm of torque. The tested fuel consumption was 5.9 litres/100 km.
