What is RMI all about? Do you know? Well, RMI, or the Retail Motor Industry, provides one voice for its 8 200 members. RMI is always looking for better solutions to problems put forward by members concerning their daily affairs. Members can channel their requests through 5 regional offices across South Africa, which have a staff of 63 professional staff. RMI also represents employers at the Motor Industry Bargaining Council, playing a crucial part in labour resolutions and disputes.1
What are the objectives of the RMI?1
These include promoting the well-being of its members and motorists in general and adhering to proper standards. It’s involved in settling labour disputes between members and their employees and manages any legislation that affects its members. It has affiliations with other bodies that share common interests, such as NAAMSA or the National Assessment of Automobile Manufacturers of South Africa. RMI also provides programmes that improve the professional standards of its members.
RMI provides some services1
It gives correct information to its members and consumers. It promotes the accreditation of its members to make them attractive to motorists. It enforces quality and standards by the removal of counterfeit spare parts. This way protects the consumers from their cars breaking down due to the use of sub-standard parts. RMI endorses national motoring exhibitions such as the Johannesburg International Motor Show. Its National Consumer Affairs departments address issues raised by consumers and members and act as an intermediary to resolve matters.
RMI’s code of conduct1
RMI has a Consumer Code of Conduct whereby accredited members promise the consumers to provide quality products and charge services at a fair price. Members also undertake to honour any guarantees made regarding their products and services.
RMI’s strong focus on training1
RMI addresses its members’ training needs by serving on several forums of MerSETA, which is one of the 21 Sector Education and Training Authorities (SETAs).
Looking after labour1
RMI has professional IR consultants at the six regional offices who negotiate with unions on wage matters. It also provides representation at various labour forums.
What are your consumer rights as a motorist?2
The RMI promotes both the services providers and consumer rights. According to the Consumer Protection Act, many consumers do not know what rights they have. In this way, service providers could exploit certain situations. The Act does specifically refer to the maintenance and repair of vehicles. RMI says that it’s always advisable to rely on legal expertise for any disputes.
Motorists must get a quote2
According to the Act, no car service provider may repair anything without the consumer’s consent.
