You can buy the Focus ST1 for R457 800. If you want more extreme specifications, choose the ST3, but at a cost of R501 100. Both models take 6.5 seconds to reach 100 km/h. 1
4. Renault Clio Rs 220 Trophy
It’s Renault again, but this time it’s the Clio RS Trophy, the baby hatchback. Renault improved the automatic gearbox of the Clio RS Trophy variant and increased its power output and torque to 162 kW and 280 Nm, respectively. It completes the 0-100 km/h dash in 6.6 seconds. The car costs R438 900, but the cheaper Lux model goes for R392 900, being only 0.1 second slower in reaching 100 km/h.1
5. Audi A3 2.0 TFSI Auto
The Audi A3 is equipped with a 2-litre, turbocharged petrol engine, 3 generating 140 kW and 320 Nm. With this engine and a fast-shifting 7-speed dual-clutch gearbox, 3 the Audi A3 is able to reach 100 km/h in 6.7 seconds. 1 The German 3-door is selling for R468 000, and the Sportback for R475 500.
6. Abarth 500 595 Competizione 1.4T
Manufacturer of Fiats, Abarth succeeded in improving the acceleration capabilities of its standard models. The 595 Competizione has a 1.4-litre, turbo engine producing 132 kW and 230 Nm. With modifications to its suspension, the Fiat manages to reach 100 km/h in 6.7 seconds. Its price tag is R459 900. 1
7. Audi A1 3-Door 1.8 TFSI Sport
In 2017, Audi S1 Quattro was first on this list, but the VAT increase took it beyond the R500 000 cut-off point. However, the Audi A1 has a 1.8-litre, TFSI engine, producing 141 kW of power and 250 Nm of torque.4 The Audi 3-door takes 6.8 seconds to reach 100 km/h, whereas the Sportback requires 6.9 seconds. The 3-door will cost you R423 000, and the Sportback, R430 500. 1
8. Volvo V40 T4 Momentum
The classy Volvo V40 has a 2-litre, turbo petrol engine, delivering 140 kW of power and 300 Nm of torque. It enables the V40 to do the 0 – 100 km/h dash in 6.9 seconds. The car retails at R450 900.1,4

Having joined the 2018 list for the first time, the Opel Astra Sport is able to do the 0 – 100 km/h in 7 seconds. Its engine produces 147 kW of power and 280 Nm of torque, and is mated to a 6-speed, manual gearbox. It fetches a price of R444 667. 1
