Sales in South Africa’s new-vehicle market continue to climb, according to data produced by the National Association of Automobile Manufacturers of South Africa (Naamsa). For instance, November 2022 sales increased by 18.2% compared to the same time a year ago. This article describes the 12 best-selling cars available in South Africa in 2023.1
Toyota leads the way
Toyota produced the highest sales in November 2022, involving 13,903 vehicles. The much sought-after, famous Hilux bakkie partially contributed to this success, making up 3,048 units of this total.1
Which were the leading Toyota models?
Toyota managed to capture five places of the 12 cars mentioned in this article. After the Toyota Hilux, the Toyota Corolla Cross came second with 2,109 units sold in November. In fourth place was the Toyota Hi-Ace, followed by the Toyota Urban cruiser and Toyota Starlet in ninth and tenth positions, respectively.1
What were the most popular brands?
Toyota headed the list, followed by the Volkswagen Group, and with Suzuki Auto in third place.1
A breakdown of who bought new vehicles
The industry sold a total of 45,966 vehicles in November 2022, of which dealers sold 81%. Another 14.7% of sales went to the vehicle rental industry, 2.3% to the State, and 2% to corporate industry fleets.1
The top ten brands with corresponding sales figures in November 2022
These were Toyota (13,903 units); Volkswagen Group (6,406 units); Suzuki (4,287 units); Nissan (3,167 units); Hyundai (3,002 units); Ford (2,347 units); Haval (2,220 units); Isuzu (2,027 units); Kia (1,892 units); and Renault (1,801 units).1
What does 2023 hold?
Even though sales were significant in November 2022, the new vehicle market has experienced seven increases in interest rates since November 2021. The high interest rates place severe pressure on household budgets. Because of this, the industry predicts only single-digit growth during 2023, while it expects a decline in European export sales. Fortunately, the leisure travel and business upswing positively impacted the new vehicle market.1
November 2022 sales did well?
Despite the negative news, the new vehicle market sales still outperformed the previous year’s sales by 13.8%. Because of this, and the introduction of several new models, the outlook for growth in vehicle exports appears to be stable.1
