BAIC D20 (From R149 990)1
The largest manufacturer in China, namely, BAIC, introduced the D20 hatchback to the South African market in 2017. The entry model is equipped with a 1.3-litre petrol engine with a power output of 75 kW and 128 Nm of torque. The remainder of the D20 range all have 1.3-litre petrol engines, generating 75 kW power and 128 Nm of torque and are mated to either a 5-speed manual or 4-speed automatic transmission.
Suzuki S-Presso (From R152 900) 1
Suzuki launched its new perky hatchback, the S-Presso, on the South African market in 2020. It has a 1.0-litre petrol engine generating 50 kW power and 190 Nm torque and is married to either a 5-speed manual or a 5-speed automated manual transmission.
Suzuki Celerio (From R153 900) 1
The Suzuki Celerio entered the South African market in 2015, and a year later, the Celerio 1.0 GL was awarded the Budget car champion in the 2016 iteration of the Cars.co.za Consumer Awards supported by Wesbank. The Celerio has a 3-cylinder, 1.0-litre petrol engine that delivers 50 kW of power and 90 Nm of torque, connected to a 5-speed manual gearbox or a 5-speed automatic transmission. Prices range from R153 900 for the Celerio 1.0 GA to R185 900 for the Celerio 1.0 GL automatic.
Mahindra KUV100 Nxt 1.2 G80 K2+ (From R162 999) 1
This entry-level car has fared extremely well against its competitors. It generates 61 kW power and 115 Nm torque with a 3-cylinder, 1.2-litre petrol engine mated to a 5-speed manual gearbox. It is equipped with 2 airbags and ABS brakes with EBD for safety.
Renault Kwid (R170 400) 1
The Renault Kwid has gained much popularity in South Africa and is the top seller of all Renault models in South Africa. The Kwid has a 3-cylinder, 1.0-litre petrol engine producing 50 kW of power and 91 Nm of torque. The engine’s power is harnessed with either an Automated Manual Transmission (AMT) or 5-speed manual transmission. For safety, the Kwid features 2 airbags and ABS brakes. The entry-level Kwid 1.0 Expression comes at R170 400, but the top-of-the-range Kwid Climber starts at R191 400.
