The AA obtained pricing from various Gauteng dealerships to eliminate any possible bias when comparing the different categories of vehicles that were chosen. The AA considered within each category the popular models, and those of the same price where possible.

Among 63 types of vehicles, several double cab bakkies were included from a group of cars selling the most every month in South Africa.
The main contenders for the top1
The Toyota Hilux and the Ford Ranger have been battling for first place for many years. The Hilux has come first as the most sold passenger car for several years now, with the Volkswagen Polo Vivo in second place, followed by the Ford Ranger.
Ford’s huge plans for 20221
Ford hasn’t taken this challenge lightly and intends to outrival the Polo by investing R15.8 billion (US$1.05 billion) for developing its South African manufacturing infrastructure.
The Ford assembly plant in Silverton, Pretoria1
In 2022, Ford will expand and equip the South African plant with new systems and technologies to manufacture their all-new Ranger bakkie. Ford plans to reach an optimal level of production of the completely new Ranger at the Silverton plant. To achieve this, it will inject a R10.3 billion (US$686 million) for upgrades, new technologies and facilities.
The double-cab bakkie category1
This category is divided into 3 sub-groups of prices: those for parts required for repairs, those used for servicing, and those needed by panel beaters. Vehicles chosen for the Report were the Ford Ranger 2.0SiT XLT FX4, the Mitsubishi Triton 2.4 Extreme A/T, the Toyota Hilux 2.8 Raider A/T, the Nissan Navara 2.5 LE A/T, the Isuzu D-Max 300 3.0TD LX A/T, and the VW Amarok 2.0 Highline.
Who won? 1
The Ranger clinched first prize with maintenance parts costing a little over R11 400, while the Mitsubishi Triton’s costs were triple that of the Ranger’s. On the other hand, maintenance parts costs of the VW Amarok, which was also the most expensive of all the vehicles selected, soared to R29 750. The Ranger’s service parts also cost the least at slightly more than R5 000, while the Mitsubishi Triton’s costs were high at more than R13 000.
