The Toyota Corolla has been a South African favourite for many years. The first Corolla arrived at South African dealerships over 50 years ago. The cars made by Toyota are synonymous with longevity and affordability.
Interestingly, Toyota wants to take further advantage of the legendary Corolla name by giving it to the next generation Auris model. Toyota has discontinued the Auris nameplate in 2019.
Let’s explore what the new Toyota Corolla Hatch is all about. This new Toyota model isn’t the first Corolla Hatch, but the name disappeared for many years when the emergence of RunX and Auris models came about.
It’s got the looks 1,2,3,4
The 2019 Corolla Hatch is certainly eye-catching and arguably looks sporty as well. This hatchback gains 40 mm of length while the height of the vehicle drops by 25 mm.
Fuel-efficient performance 1,2,3,4
Fuel economy is the order of the day with the ever-increasing price of fuel in mind. The Corolla Hatch only comes with an efficient 1.2-litre 4-cylinder turbo-petrol engine, which has a claimed fuel consumption of 6.1 L/100 km. This motor doesn’t lack power with an output of 85 kW and 185 Nm. The engine has no problem revving to generate enough power while driving, which provides sufficient performance for a daily commuter.
The 6-speed manual or the 10-step CVT gearboxes help the Corolla Hatch improve its efficiency as well. The CVT gearbox makes use of Toyota’s Direct Shift technology, which offers eco, normal and sport driving modes.
The Xs base model fitted with the 6-speed manual will reach 100 km/h from a standstill in 9.4 seconds. Other Corolla Hatch Xs and Xr models with the CVT gearbox fitted will drive from 0 km/h to 100 km/hr in 10.4 seconds.
Improved handling 1,2,3,4
In terms of handling, the Corolla Hatch features several improvements over the Auris model it replaces. The Corolla Hatch has a lower centre of gravity and a new multi-link rear suspension. This hatchback is built on the New Global Architecture platform, which makes the car’s body 60% stiffer than its predecessor’s body. All models come standard with various safety technologies, which includes 7 airbags and feature called Vehicle Stability Control, which improves the car’s level of safety, road holding and prevents your car from rolling back on an inclined road surface.
Interior refinement and technology 1,2,3,4
Experts believe that the interior quality is top-notch with a touch of minimalism. All Corolla Hatch models come standard with the keyless entry. Experience dual-zone climate control air conditioning while seated in sports seats. Enjoy driving with daytime running lights and LED headlights as a standard. The touchscreen infotainment centre is easily accessible and features Bluetooth connectivity. Take advantage of other standard features like the reverse camera and cruise control when out and about.
