What is the new Toyota Rumion? 1
Completely different from the rear-while drive Avanza, the front-wheel-drive Rumion is the third car to be produced via a joint effort between Toyota and Maruti Suzuki in India. Besides the grille and badge, it looks almost the same as the Suzuki Ertiga. However, the fact that the Rumion has front-wheel drive means it is much safer, especially since the MPV is made for family use. The car is selling at the entry-level for R245 000.
How does it drive?1
Unfortunately, a complete road test of the Rumion is still outstanding, but a short test conducted during a recent launch was most remarkable. The MPV handles well and provides an excellent ride. The 5-speed manual gearbox is a joy to operate, but the 4-speed gearbox is not yet available.
The Rumion’s engine1
The whole Rumion range has a Suzuki-endorsed 1.5-litre, normally aspirated petrol engine, delivering a power output of 77 kW and torque of 138 Nm. However, test drivers found the engine slightly lacking in power, although the test car had not yet been run in, having only 100 km on the odometer.
The practicality of the MPV1
The second-row seats have a 60:40 split, and one can create extra leg space for those sitting in the second tow by sliding it back and forth. However, the legroom in the third row is not so great because it cannot slide back to create more space.
What about the interior? 1
This lacks good looks but is solidly made, and the tougher materials used meet the standards of this segment.
What features does each model have? 1
The Toyota Rumion comes as 3 models – the S, SX and TX. The S model is basic, with unpainted mirrors and 15-inch bare steel wheels. Manual air conditioning and electric windows are standard. The 1.5 SX, starting at R273 500, has an extra Double Din 4-speaker audio system and Bluetooth connectivity, USB, and aux inputs. In addition, it has rear air conditioning, steer-mounted controls, remote central locking, a rear-window demister, a 12 V rear power socket, and park-distance control. The top-of-the-range TX comes at R301 600 and has extra features such as a touchscreen audio system with 6 speakers, Android Auto and Apple CarPlay connectivity, and a camera for reversing. Climate control is automatic, and an extra 12 V power socket has been added.
