Review of the Nissan Navara for sale in South Africa in 2021

The Nissan Navara is a South African-built bakkie ideally suited to local conditions and requirements of bakkie owners. Even so, despite its recent facelift, can it continue to dominate the double-cab segment? Let’s find out more from the review.1

The Navara is manufactured locally1

The launch of the completely new Nissan Navara in 2017 did not meet Nissan’s expectations, mainly because of the stiff challenge from the Mercedes-Benz X-Class, in the same segment. By replacing the standard leaf-sprung rear suspension with a coil-spring alternative, making it more stable at high speeds. They would supposedly use the Navara as a luxury car during the week and do off-road driving over weekends. Unfortunately, there were mixed results, with more buyers choosing the Ford Ranger, Toyota Hilux, and Volkswagen Amarok.

What kind of engine does the Navara have? 1

The double-cab segment, including Ford, Toyota, and specifically Volkswagen, has strived to produce powerful engines to meet customer expectations. The previous Navara’s 2.3-litre turbodiesel engine has been replaced by a new 2.5-litre single turbocharged diesel engine generating a power output of 140 kW and 450 Nm of torque. This only applies to the LE and PRO (2x or 4x) spec models.

How well does the engine perform? 1

There was some lag when pulling away and accelerating, but there is sufficient power to deal with the highway. The engine is mated to a 7-speed automatic transmission, providing a seamless performance through correct gear selection.

The Navara’s fuel consumption1

The Navara has a claimed fuel consumption of 8.1 litres/100 km, but local testing during the launch revealed 9.6 litres/100 km consumption.

How does the Navara drive? 1

The upgraded suspension is undoubtedly providing the motorist with a smoother ride. The Navara is also stable to drive on dirt roads, while its steering is light yet direct.

The Navara’s interior not upgraded much1

The interior hasn’t changed much, but 4 USB ports and a 12 V power outlet improved connectivity. In addition, Android Auto and Apple CarPlay are available on the infotainment touchscreen, which is not on the same par as those in the updated Hilux or Ford Ranger. Unfortunately, the interior’s luxury does not reach the same standard shown by the segment rivals.
