Since its first launch, worldwide sales have exceeded 18 million—South Africa’s local manufacturing plant is located in Kariega (Uitenhage).
The Kariega manufacturing plant1
This plant manufactures the entire range of Polos, including the previous generation GTI and Polo Vivo. South Africa is the only country to manufacture the GTI and lies second to Germany in that market size. South Africa comes in the top 10 worldwide regarding Polo ownership. Annual production at the plant is 165 000 cars or 680 cars per day at 5 days per week, with three-quarters of those destined for export. The plant also builds engines for export to Malaysia and India.

The hatchback was upgraded to keep up with the times, focusing mainly on excellent connectivity and digitalisation – something the market views paramount importance.
What is the Polo range?1
This consists of the entry-level Polo, Polo Life, Polo R-Line, and the GTI. Modern cars have become more prominent, and the Polo is no exception. Its size at present equals that of Golf 3, while its internal dimensions exceed that of Golf 4. The Polo’s interior1
The entire cabin has gone digital, and you won’t find any analogue dial or switch anywhere. Instead, the interior layout is professionally done. The powertrain1
The three-cylinder Life version, generating a power output of 70 kW and 175 Nm of torque, makes the car a delight to drive. The engine is married to either a 7-speed DSG automatic transmission or a 5-speed manual gearbox. Engines delivering 85 kW and 200 Nm are available in the Life or R-Line specification from the end of February 2022 onwards.
How does the Polo handle and perform?1
Gear changes are effortlessly made using slight clutch action and provide much performance with the small 1.0-litre petrol engine. Using cruise control, it travels at great ease along the highway, comfortably overtaking slow vehicles. The direct and light steering makes it a dream to drive.
