In mid-2014, the first Grand i10 arrived in South Africa. In the eyes of Hyundai, this small hatchback was to perpetuate the success generated by the legendary Getz, which disappeared from the marketplace in 2017. The arrival of the Grand i101
In 2021, the new version Grand i10 came from India to land on our shores. It resembles the Getz’s size, 40 mm longer, while the axles are 25 mm wider, making the wheelbase identical to that of the Suzuki Swift. This renders the car amazingly spacious, with plenty of rear legroom and headroom.
What about the interior? 1
The middle rear passenger can only use a lap belt, but fortunately, the other rear passengers have access to a unique air vent and a useful 12 v socket. Unfortunately, the squab of the height-adjustable driver’s seat might lean too much forward in the lowest setting for some South African motorists. At the same time, there is no reach adjustment available for the steering column. What makes up for this is the reasonably high hip point that facilitates entry and exit by older occupants. The seats consist of faux leather, while the door trim and other parts are covered with cheaper plastic.
Some details about the dashboard1
The instrument cluster merges an analogue tachometer with a digital speedometer, displaying large and easily visible numbers. Unlike the Indian models, the South African versions have a smaller infotainment touch screen but still have Apple CarPlay and Android Auto functions and a USB port added to the one near the gear lever.
The Grand i10’s engine1
The engine is similar in performance to that of the Swift, where a naturally aspirated 1.2-litre compact engine generating 61 kW of power replaces the previous 1.25-litre, 4-cylinder engine.
How’s the Grand i10’s performance? 1
It takes an open throttle and plenty of gear changes with the 5-speed transmission to achieve good speed. By changing the cog spacing, third gear has become more powerful than that of the previous version. Clutch and transmission action as well steering flow easily, which is ideal for city driving. Freeway driving could provide another picture because the driver might have to make many steering inputs. The ride is soft and comfortable, ably assisted by a 60-profile rubber surrounding the 2-tone 15-inch alloys.
What about safety? 1
The Hyundai Grand i10 has several safety features. There are 2 airbags fitted and ABS brakes with EBD, but there is no electronic stability control. The Global NCAP’s** recent crash test results showed the car’s structure and footwell unstable. However, the vehicle performed well during ten gruelling braking tests, which significantly improved the previous model. Hyundai has also fitted ISOFIX child seat anchors. Strangely enough, the rear wiper is missing and yet present in older models.
