In South Africa, the Haval H6 SUV is hot off the press, launched in June 2021 but not in the usual way. The launch event was cancelled because of the Adjusted Level 4 of the lockdown. Instead, the third-generation H6 was taken to the homes of the various media guests to experience the car first-hand. Read on about the review of the Haval H6.1
Some of the H6 models available1
The H6 2.0T 2WD Luxury 2-litre SUV model sells for R454 900 (June 2021). Three more 2-litre models have also been launched, namely, the 2.0T 2WD Premium (R419 900), the 2.0T 4WD Luxury (R479 900) and the 2.0T 4WD Super Luxury (R514 900). Cheaper 1.5-litre derivatives are planned for a launch in August 2021. These prices echo Haval’s strong selling point – good value for money.
What is the Haval’s modular platform? 1
Haval highlights the fact that the new modular platform is light in weight and high in strength. The latter is due to almost 72% of the SUV’s construction consisting of hi-strength steel. The H6 2.0T 2WD Luxury 2-litre SUV model, which was the test vehicle, weighs about 1 600 kg.
The exterior of the H6 1
The front part of the H6 is made impressive by a metal mesh grille and enhanced by striking fog lights and LED lights. The flanks of the car project a more conventional look as opposed to a specific style. The rear end of the H6 consists of taillights that merge to form a red plastic band running along the entire width of the tailgate.
The wheels of the H6 range1
The H6 2.0T 2WD Luxury 2-litre SUV model is equipped with 18-inch alloy wheels. But according to the ‘Car mag’ test driver, the small wheels of the H6 reveal too much wheel-arch recess space, exposing the suspension components. This, in turn, doesn’t do the quality image of the H6 any justice.
What about the H6’s interior? 1
Haval has done much to provide an ultra-modern look to the dashboard, typified by a large 12.3-inch touch screen. In addition, leather features and the use of high-quality plastic enhance the looks of the console and dashboard area.
The seat design has its challenges1
Slight pleating is visible with the backrests and seat squabs, while side-bolstering is largely lacking. Also, the rather dull and old-fashioned grey leather cover detracts from the modern look of the car. Nevertheless, it’s easy to get into and out of the vehicle due to the absence of prominent bolstering. Finally, despite some of these issues, the seats were found to be comfortable.
The H6’s performance1
The new direct-injection, 2-litre petrol turbo engine provides 150 kW of power and 320 Nm torque to the front wheels via a new second-generation 7-speed dual-clutch transmission. The throttle input was found to be quite sensitive, which made smooth parking a challenge. Pulling off from the start resulted in a wheel spin instead of the intended normal smooth start.
