The recent arrival of GWM’s new P-Series bakkie will no doubt challenge the leisure double-cab segment. Should this competition be taken seriously? They did a test drive on the top-of-the-range P-Series LT 4×4 to answer that question.1
What does a GWM P-Series mean?1
The Chinese manufacturing giant GWM is a brand that has established itself in South Africa with its Steed bakkies series at the bottom end of the single- and double-cab 4×4 segment. After launching its P-Series in 2019, GWM made it no secret that it aimed for its new arrival to land in the top 3 bakkies globally, besides Ford and Toyota. Even though this may sound pushy, GWM has been quite successful worldwide with its SUV brand Haval.
What about the P-Series? 1
After its recent launch in South Africa, it is evident that the P-Series is more of a leisure double-cab bakkie compared to its Steed relatives. However, it looks more striking on the outside, has a well-equipped cabin, and has great 4×4 potential. The P-Series LT 4×4 automatic competes, amongst others, with the Ford Ranger 2.2 TDCi 4×4 and the Toyota Hilux 2.4 GD-6 4×4. Judging from the LT’s improved power and torque delivery and a well-furnished cabin, this 4×4 may well be a force to be reckoned with on rough terrain.
How will the P-Series fare in the bakkie market? 1
The South African bakkie market is massive, yet the P-Series bakkies are beginning to appear more and more on our roads. The critical question is if the P-Series can influence a most brand-loyal group of bakkie followers and take a good slice of this profitable segment. First, let’s discover how well this bakkie looks and performs.
The P-Series exterior1
Seeing size is not an issue for GWM. This bakkie is massive, being 5 410 mm long, 1 886 mm high, 1 934 mm wide, and having a 3 230-mm wheelbase. These dimensions exceed all those of both the Toyota Hilux and Ford Ranger bakkies. In addition, it has a most flashy face, made up of a massive chrome grille and brand logo, and protected by a substantial chrome sports bar. Eying the grille on either side are LED headlights, including integrated daytime running lights, whilst fancy LED clusters adorn the rear.
How’s the interior? 1
The opulent interior is striking, with the LT derivative showing off quilted leather upholstery that continues to the upper section of the dashboard. The doors’ insides, consisting of a quilted leather design, complete the perfect setting. In addition, the structural quality of this 4×4 appears to outstrip that of other bakkies in the same segment.
How does the P-Series perform? 1
The GWM P-Series landed in the South African market powered by a turbodiesel engine similar to the 16-derivative range. The 2.0-litre 4-cylinder engine generates 120 kW power and 400 Nm torque transmitted via an 8-speed ZF automatic gearbox. The P-Series lacks no power on the road, but drivers may experience a power lag when applying firm acceleration. Indeed, its overall performance equals that of its competitors.
