Hyundai is now well-established in South Africa, and the i20 has been one of its most sort after models to date. The first i20 arrived in 2009. The 2018 i20’s appearance has been refreshed for 2019 with several visual enhancements. The new i20 has a striking revitalised appearance. The Active model has a more rugged flair with plastic sports guard panels in the front and back of the car, together with higher ground clearance, gives the i20 more of a crossover look than that of a hatchback.
The i20 has redesigned alloy wheels. Daytime-running lights are a new and welcomed addition to the front of the standard i20. The hatch’s rear lights have been revised together with a restyled tailgate design. The i20 Active retains the 2018 model’s tailgate design.

Various interior panels are colour-coded to match the exterior paint colour, which adds a fun and youthful touch to the i20. A 7-inch touchscreen infotainment system with auxiliary and USB ports is easily accessible for the driver and front passenger. The infotainment system can be upgraded to include a satellite navigation system.

Small, efficient engines are the order of the day with the i20, which is typical amongst most of the cars on sale in South Africa at present. You have a choice between a 1.2 litre and a 1.4-litre petrol engine. These engines are not fitted with turbochargers which means that their performance would be affected if driven in Gauteng due to the high altitude when compared to the coastal regions of South Africa. Nevertheless, motoring journalists have not found the performance lacking for its intended city life use.
Manual gearboxes on offer range from a 5-speed to a 6-speed manual depending on the model. A 4-speed automatic is also an alternative.
Refined composure 1,2,3
Car experts were pleased with the i20’s handling, which was described as ‘refined and comfortable.’ The i20 Active model’s higher ride height of 170mm negatively affected the car’s handling under certain driving conditions when tested. Nevertheless, the Active model’s ride height and protective guards do make it a more versatile vehicle compared to the standard model.
