Are you looking to buy a new car? Cars.co.za test team drove the top-model Mazda2 1.5 DE Hazumi for a whole month down the Garden Route to experience driving this small, automatic diesel hatchback. Let’s find out more about their review of this car.1
The hatchback has a 1.5-litre, 4-cylinder diesel engine, producing 77 kW of power, and 220 Nm of torque are transferred via a 6-speed automatic transmission to the front wheels. Its performance is sufficient to meet the challenge of its competitors. A stiffer suspension and 17-inch alloy wheels enable the car to handle all the road challenges and corners.
Local sales reps confirm that the Mazda2 and Mazda CX-3 are much sought-after, whilst the World car of the Year Mazda MX-5 sells in great numbers.
The turbodiesel engine and transmission make a great team. There is a minor time lag on take-off, which may cause you to overcompensate with the accelerator. This, in turn, will activate the turbo motor, providing a jerky acceleration. The Mazda2 starts to release all its torque between 1500 and 2000 rpm and peaks at 4000 rpm. This, coupled with the 6-speed automatic transmission, works superbly in the city.
Avoid pressing the accelerator pedal to the floor, as this makes the transmission gear down too fast. Instead, use the manual override rather if you happen to be in a hurry. The car has an automatic start/stop system to save fuel.
The Cars.co.za test drivers took the Mazda2 from Cape Town to Plettenberg Bay. They found boot space challenging, although folding the seats down to cause a 60/40 split did help. Cruise control was missing, but access to the two most helpful USB ports made up for this. The driver commented that all B-segment cars should be equipped with several USB ports as they demand today’s electronic needs.
The claimed fuel consumption is 4.4 L/100 km, but on the long trip, this became 5.5 L/100 km at 120 km/hr and 5 L/100 km at 110 km/hr. The driver estimated that cruising on a long journey at 95 km/hr could provide a great fuel consumption at about 4 L/100 km. With cruise control, perhaps even better fuel consumption could be achieved.
