Why not go online and explore the Internet for those amazing places to visit?A survey by Booking.com, a top world travel agency that links travellers with wonderful destinations, has indicated that the most popular destinations are nearly all located in Europe. Each place is absolutely unique in what it has to offer.1
Welcome to Paris, the romantic city of Europe. In this city, that never goes to sleep, there is a wealth of items to feast on. Most travellers like to visit museums and do sightseeing. Famous landmarks include the Eiffel Tower, built in the 19th century, and the Notre Dame, the gothic church with its exceptional architecture. Let’s not forget the Louvre, with its kilometres of corridors displaying unimaginable artwork, including the world’s most renowned, and heavily guarded Mona Lisa. Then there are the pavement restaurants where they will quickly tell you that the entire world will pass you by while you sit and enjoy your French coffee. For those interested in clothes and Parisian fashion there is a myriad of shops from which to choose. 1
Escape to Spain which is known for its sun and milder Mediterranean climate compared to the rest of Europe. Barcelona, the capital of Catalonia, is famous for its culture, sightseeing and architecture.1 After Paris, London, Madrid, the Ruhr district, and Milan, it is the 6th most populated city in the European Union.2 It is on the edge of the beautiful Mediterranean sea, and has on its west side a mountain range called Serra de Collserola. The architectural creations by Antoni Gaudi and Lluis Domènech i Montaner have been declared UNESCO World Heritage Sites. 2 The 1992 Summer Olympics was held in Barcelona. The Art Nouveau concert hall should not be missed, as well as the Palau de la Música Catalana, which boasts of a magnificent dome of stained glass.
Founded by the Romans, and situated on the River Thames, the City has much to offer, from the mindboggling wealth of Belgravia to the various urban market places. Every suburb has its own unique character and beauty. London is a world-class city leading in just about everything from culture to business. 1,3 Four World Heritage Sites are found in London, namely, the Tower of London, Kew Gardens, the location that includes the Palace of Westminster, Westminster Abbey, and St Margaret’s Church, and lastly Greenwich. Other noteworthy places to visit are Buckingham Palace, the London Eye, St Paul’s Cathedral, Tower Bridge, Piccadilly Circus, Trafalgar Square, and The Shard. Famous museums include the British Museum, the National Art gallery, and the Natural History Museum. Don’t forget to try out the world’s oldest underground rail network, called the London Underground.
For all those art lovers and those after special culture, Vienna is an absolute must to visit. After strolling about in many museums, you can catch the tram to visit Belvedere Palace, or get a taste of high fashion at the Graben and Kärntner Strasse. Go back in time to the Middle Ages by exploring St Stephen’s Cathedral, which is only metres away from Vienna’s oldest hotel, the Hotel König von Ungarn. Built in 1746, the Hotel first became the guesthouse of the archbishop of that time, but today offers a mouth-watering Viennese and Austrian cuisine. 1
Malaga, situated on the coast and called the capital of Costa del Sol, displays a range of classy boutiques, cafes, and waterfront restaurants. Promenades along the Mediterranean Sea allow for wonderful romantic strolls. The city boasts of about 30 museums, as well as the La Manquita Renaissance Cathedral, Alcazaba Fortress, and the 10thcentury Gibralfaro Castle that overlook the Mediterranean. 1
If you are looking for a romantic getaway, then Venice is the place for you. This city is impressive with rich artworks and steeped in history. The museums are amazing, while the travelling on the waterways in a gondola peaks your stay. A gondola ride on the Grand Canal that takes you under the Rialto Bridge will be an unforgettable experience. The iconic St Mark’s Basilica, with its amazing mosaic and undulating floors, and gilded domes provide a unique experience. The museum of Doge’s Palace and its Gothic architecture is also something to behold. 1
‘When in Rome, do as the Romans do,’ the saying goes. Well, that is not very hard, as you flow with the Italian traffic and way of life. Rome is a city that offers so much that you will always see something new when you visit yet again. The tyres of motor cars and Vespa scooters make a noise as they negotiate the beautiful cobble-stoned streets, leading to landmark places such as the Colosseum. Possibly small compared to our modern and huge stadiums of today, it was, nonetheless, a remarkable building feat of its day. If only those walls could describe what used to happen there. Vatican City is most impressive, especially the Sistine Chapel,4 located in the Apostolic Palace, which is the Pope’s residence. It is famous for the Last Judgement, painstakingly painted on its ceiling by Michelangelo.
